Cheap Dates / Candy Snatchers split

For a while, Man’s Ruin was doing this weird thing where they’d release a 10” from two bands, then a few months or so later, issue a CD with both bands on it – but Kozik would design the cover so that you’d never know that it was a split. Such was the case with my band where we got all the “glory” and local hardcore band "the Idiots" got the short end of the stick (and UPC code). In this case, it was the Cheap Dates.
Anyways, you all know who the Candy Snatchers are, so the Cheap Dates were good friends of ours from the bay area fronted by my buddy and ex-roommate Pete Jay (Black Queen, Wormwood, etc…), and featured Shane White’s brother Jason on drums. They were a really good and creative band, but perhaps a little too weird for some of the persnickety garage rock scene. Check em out, and listen to what’s not the best Candy Snatchers songs ever, but still pretty decent stuff.

Canada's Teen Crud Combo sound like a lot of bands did during the 90s: A sort of Dwarves/Zeke/New Bomb Turks hybrid. I always remembered this 7" standing out more than most of that stuff, and listening to it again it really does. It also features Allyson Baker who moved out this way shortly after their demise.

For such a great, short lived band, the Jewws put out a 10" with one of the worst covers ever. Don't let that scare you off though, because what you got here is one of the better garage punk records of the '90s (pushing 2000s). I saw 'em live once (not this show, but check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQRn-E8WTsI) and they were every bit as good as all the hype surrounding them at the time. Take a listen and search out their LP "L'Explosion Du Son De Maintenant!"

This rare 1972 record reminds me of a mix of The Rolling Stones (Exile era) with some of the hooks and melodies Husker Du and Redd Kross might write (The opening track is pretty similar to "Books About UFOs")...fucking amazing!

Snotty vocals (think Kepi Ghoulie and King Tuff meet the singer of The Koala) mix with early Boston punk on the more rockin' tunes . "My Imagination" sounds like a NY Dolls/Hollywood Brats song (with a "Rocks Off" intro!) and they turn the Kinks "Yes Sir, No Sir" melody on it's head with the closing track "Only Just An Act". This record (that I only discovered this year) I can't recommend enough and is an absolute CLASSIC! The CDs are getting hard to find, so pick one up before it's too late!

There are some albums that I instantly fall in love with. This is one of them. There's some catchy mellower folk on here, but also some BLAZING atmospheric garage psyche!
"My Castle Has Fallen" rocks like Grand Funk, the spooky but upbeat "When You're Dead" could have easily been in Arthur Brown's repertoire, while "Hearts And Flowers" is a soothing tune that falls somewhere between Mary Hopkin, Fairport Convention and Pentangle.
The Ghost formed in the late 60s releasing just one record before changing their name and splitting up. If anyone knows more info, post a message!

The most curious thing is how "Night of the Warlock" is seriously close to Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime" a year later - if it was darker...and about warlocks.

I bought my copy on eBay, for $22, which is still cheaper than the $38 Amazon charges.
