Oiler
One of my favorite "noisy" punk bands of the early '90s was L.A.'s Oiler. There was a time when I could tell you the names of the people in the band, but it's been too long. Aside from this 7", they did splits with Rig and Bokomono...not sure what else they put out. They were really cool live, and the female singer used to bang on an oil drum while singing. Oiler was also one of the few L.A. bands brave enough to come down to Palm Springs for a show playing at "J.B.'s Thirsty Bull" when I was 20 years old. Actually I think Dave Gomez from "Left Insane" may have been in this band.
I like side 2 better than the A side, so if you like stuff like Pain Teens and Distorted Pony, give it all a listen!

The singer was named Beth Capper. They put out a CD on Sympathy the the Record Industry. They played some pretty great live shows in the mid-90s
ReplyDeleteoh yeah, their best song was "Dumb job" and that CD they did was called "Missing Part One".A guy named Evan was in the band as well.
ReplyDeleteI kinda thought her name was Beth, but I couldn't find anything online. Thanks! I only saw them twice I think. I have two live shows too.
ReplyDeleteI actually knew Evan (Parker?) when I lived in LA. I went to his house and he showed me his ridiculous Chrome record collection and told me funny stories about touring Europe with Helios Creed in the reformed Chrome. Nice guy. He also gave me a bunch of stuff he released on Big Jesus. I ran into him a couple times in clubs after that. I always wanted to hear Oiler. Now I have. They're pretty good!
ReplyDeleteGreat band. Evan was super nice too. The Little Holes 7" they did thru Evan's work had that amazing pop up cover !
ReplyDeleteThey were an amazing live band. My zine (Glossolalia) ran a three part interview with Beth Capper. Unfortunately she was upset with the interview and never spoke to us again which was kinda weird since we still went to see them play live at shows in LA/Hollywood. "Missing Part One" could have been a breakthrough album but I think they broke up before it was released on Sympathy. This is the band Sonic Youth should have paid attention to rather than stuff like Cell and Ben Lee.
ReplyDeletei have an issue or two of glossolalia. hey charles, dont take capper's attitude personal. it could have been an incident ten blocks away that pissed her off. or the day of the week. or a situation on the sun.
